To close out Men鈥檚 Health Month, we鈥檙e sharing an important video from our affiliates at Northwell Health, featuring 黑料吃瓜资源 Cancer Center Associate Director of Education Lloyd Trotman: 鈥淭he Unspoken Truth: A Dialogue on Prostate Cancer Among Black Men.鈥
In this powerful panel discussion, Trotman joins forces with Northwell Health, Healthfirst, and the American Cancer Society to address the disproportionately high rates of prostate cancer among Black men. Featuring candid stories from survivors, expert insights, and community perspectives, this conversation highlights the need for early screening, health education, fundamental biology research, and community support.
Reflecting on years of genetics research, Trotman addresses a common question surrounding prostate cancer. Are Black men genetically at a higher risk of getting or dying from the disease? Several recent studies showed that 鈥渢he differences [in genetic mutations] were never as stark as the actual outcomes,鈥 Trotman says. This, he adds, 鈥渟tarts to suggest that access to health care is the major driving factor鈥 behind disparities in patient outcomes.
The conversation also features Harlem Grown founder Tony Hillery, former New York Knicks star Allan Houston, Reverend Malcolm Byrd, and other advocates working to drive change. Press play to watch the full discussion and to hear Trotman discuss the genetics of prostate cancer.
