Fall 2022: Special edition

Waltz of the Polypeptides, a sculpture by Mara G. Haseltine located on the ��ϳԹ��Դ campus, depicts a ribosome caught in the act of producing the BLyS protein, which stimulates the body’s infection-fighting antibodies. In providing a glimpse at the birth of a single protein, this sculpture—like the institution that owns it—offers fascinating windows to the world of biology and beyond.

Summer 2022: Special edition

This is the path scientists who are participating in a meeting take to Nicholls Biondi Hall, opened in 2015. This is the main venue for poster sessions, a key component of scientific meetings, during which researchers display posters to engage with colleagues about their methods and outcomes. More than 5,000 posters are displayed during the typical two-year CSHL meeting cycle.

The pandemic, masks, and social distancing could not stop ��ϳԹ��Դ employees from interacting. Colleagues work at an outdoor area overlooking the harbor. Atop the gazebo behind them is a weather vane depicting an adenovirus. Work done at the Laboratory in the 1970s and 1980s was foundational for today’s adenovirus-based COVID-19 vaccines and many other medical innovations.

Summer 2019

Originally constructed in 1953, and named for CSHL Director Milislav Demerec (1941 to 1960), the newly renovated Demerec Laboratory building reopens this year. With a rich history of groundbreaking discoveries, the building holds great promise for addressing today’s most challenging diseases.

Winter 2018

Summer 2018

Dale Chihuly’s “Twisting Dendrites” hangs in the Marks Laboratory building, a hotbed of CSHL neuroscience. It is the artist’s blown-glass impression of the networks of branched extensions of nerve cells that receive inputs from other cells.

Winter 2017

“As biology becomes more molecular, it is becoming more defined,” says CSHL Professor Leemor Joshua-Tor. She has mastered technologies that allow her to use the shape of molecules to figure out what they do and how they work. Joshua-Tor is pictured alongside a cryo-electron microscope, with which she can see atomic-level 3-dimensional images. This is just one example of powerful technology scientists harness to advance biology.
