Breakthroughs

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) was once the leading genetic cause of infant death. That’s no longer the case, thanks in part to Nusinersen (brand name Spinraza). Developed by CSHL Professor Adrian Krainer and colleagues at Ionis Pharmaceuticals and Biogen, Nusinersen is the first FDA-approved treatment for SMA.

Today, more than 14,000 people worldwide have received this revolutionary treatment, built upon CSHL’s historic discovery of alternative RNA splicing.
