Born of curiosity, CSHL Fellows Program marks 40 years

Long before a scientist wins a Nobel Prize, develops an FDA-approved medicine, or makes a breakthrough discovery, she asks a question. Often, it鈥檚 one no one else thinks is worth asking. For 40 years, the Cynthia R. Stebbins Fellows Program at 黑料吃瓜资源 (CSHL) has been built around such curiosity.

Unlike traditional postdoctoral fellowships, the CSHL Fellows Program gives exceptional early-career scientists the freedom to lead. Once they鈥檝e gone through a rigorous assessment process, CSHL Fellows are greeted with their own laboratories, research teams, and the independence to pursue ambitious ideas, no matter where they may lead.

CSHL Fellows Program alumni share their remarkable research and reflect on decades of progress.

This spring, alumni returned to campus to celebrate the program鈥檚 40th anniversary. It was a reunion not simply of former Fellows, but of scientists whose work has transformed our understanding of cancer, genetics, neuroscience, plant biology, and rare diseases.

All 21 Fellows returned to present their latest research, with 19 attending in person and two virtually. Their stories share a common beginning: curiosity.

The power of asking 鈥渨hat if?鈥

Scientific breakthroughs rarely happen by following the safest path.

鈥淎s a young scientist, you might not have that much experience,鈥 says current Cynthia R. Stebbins Fellow Mitra Javadzadeh. The young neuroscientist investigates with each other to reach a shared 鈥渄ecision鈥 or coordinated response.

What she lacks in years of experience, she more than makes up for in creative vision. 鈥淢ost young scientists are filled with crazy ideas they want to try,鈥 Javadzadeh adds. 鈥淚t鈥檚 really important to give younger people the space to follow riskier directions. That leads to more creative science and more risk-taking science.”

That spirit of embracing the unknown has defined the Fellows Program since its founding in 1986. However, as any scientist knows, freedom alone isn鈥檛 enough. The environment matters, too. For Fellows, CSHL offers something difficult to replicate elsewhere: an intensely collaborative scientific community where conversations regularly cross fields of research in ways not typically seen at larger institutions.

鈥淧eople talk a lot about the collaborative spirit of CSHL,鈥 says former Fellow Hannah Meyer, now an assistant professor here and recent recipient of the coveted Rita Allen Foundation Scholarship. 鈥淎s a Fellow, it meant you could walk up to senior or junior faculty, with a small idea and simply say, 鈥楲et鈥檚 try this.鈥 Those little ideas often become opportunities to do something really big,鈥 says Meyer. For her part, it has become a quest to unravel mysteries about the immune system that have stumped biologists for decades.

Former Fellow Christopher Vakoc (now a full professor), who identified the protein BRD4 as a potential therapeutic target in leukemia, describes CSHL鈥檚 culture as one that continually encourages scientists to think beyond their own specialty.

鈥淚鈥檝e always had a sense that 黑料吃瓜资源 wasn鈥檛 a place where you simply worked away on your own little problem,鈥 he says. 鈥淭he goal was to discover concepts that span disciplines, not just how cancer works or how the brain works, but how life itself works.鈥

This shared ethos is reflected throughout CSHL, where researchers rigorously investigating plants, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, genetics, and cancer often share ideas, data, and resources across disciplines.

Small program, transformative impact

The Fellows Program, currently chaired by CSHL Professor Florin Albeanu (another former Fellow), remains remarkably selective. That鈥檚 no accident.

“[Take] the first two Fellows: Adrian Krainer, who made a drug that is actually curing people, and Carol Greider, who, of course, won the Nobel Prize. There’s a high bar for all of us,” says . “Nevertheless,” Lowe continues, “if you look at the collection of Fellows, it really has had an impact.”

Lowe would know. The former Fellow famously identified oncogene-induced senescence as a mechanism of tumor suppression. Today, he chairs the Cancer Biology & Genetics Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Research Center.

The program鈥檚 inaugural Fellow, Adrian Krainer, helped develop the first FDA-approved treatment for spinal muscular atrophy, a devastating childhood neuromuscular disease once considered untreatable.

The second Fellow, Carol Greider, discovered telomerase and linked telomere shortening to aging. She ultimately earned the Nobel Prize for her work.

Other alumni have become leaders in cancer biology, autism genetics, neuroscience, and developmental biology, to name just a few areas.

Looking back over four decades, Krainer sees a pattern. 鈥淐ollectively, it鈥檚 an enormous body of innovative, cutting-edge, creative science,鈥 he says. 鈥淚t reflects the fact that people were able to take risks and that those risks paid off.鈥

Investing in people

The anniversary celebration and symposium marked more than a milestone. During the event, longtime CSHL supporter Cynthia Rossbach Stebbins announced a significant gift to permanently endow the program that has now been renamed in her honor. Stebbins鈥 contribution, matched by CSHL Chair Marilyn Simons, ensures that future generations of Fellows will continue receiving the same rare opportunity to launch bold scientific careers.

鈥淪upporting the Fellows Program is more than funding research,鈥 Stebbins says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about ensuring brilliant, curious minds have the opportunity to explore, lead, and share the future.鈥

Stebbins first became the program鈥檚 benefactor in 1986 because she believed the greatest advances often begin long before anyone knows where they will lead. Forty years later, that belief has been repeatedly validated.

Over four decades, the Cynthia R. Stebbins Fellows Program at CSHL has fostered a culture where ideas can flourish, nurturing the next generation of scientists and turning bold questions into scientific breakthroughs.

Some become lifesaving medicines. Others reshape how we understand life itself. All begin the same way, with someone curious enough to ask a question that no one else has thought to ask, and a place willing to let them find the answer.
