How can we live healthier for longer?  History shows that the answers lie in fundamental biology. Today, CSHL’s research in the interdisciplinary fields of brain- and whole-body physiology is setting the stage for improved cancer therapeutics and biomedical advances that will allow people to maintain their physical and mental health even as they enter the later stages of life.

Understanding the connections between our minds and our bodies and their effect on physiological homeostasis has the potential to lead to revolutionary medical interventions that will enable us to remain healthy as we age.

Breakthroughs

In 1992, then-CSHL Fellow and future Nobel laureate Carol Grieder definitively linked the enzyme telomerase to cancer. Since then, CSHL scientists working on the cutting edge have continued to unravel the complex interactions between tumors, metabolism, the immune system, and the brain.

Recent studies have laid the groundwork for future therapeutics targeting a variety of age-related diseases.
