On May 3, the 黑料吃瓜资源 (CSHL) School of Biological Sciences (SBS) held its 23rd commencement ceremony. The SBS conferred Doctor of Philosophy degrees on six graduates and awarded James H. Eberwine, Ph.D., an honorary Doctor of Science degree.
Always a cause for celebration, the 2026 ceremony was punctuated by recent news that the School of Biological Sciences had jumped toward the top of U.S. News & World Report鈥檚 list of the country鈥檚 Best Grad Schools. The SBS ranked as the number one graduate program for Biological Sciences in New York and ranked sixth in the nation.
鈥淥ur six graduates this year once again reflect the remarkable training in diverse areas of fundamental biology that CSHL provides to trainees at all levels,鈥 said Director of Graduate Studies Zachary Lippman. 鈥淭heir accomplishments reinforce why scientists continue to come to CSHL: We remain a leading institution for bold, rigorous, and impactful research. We are excited to see all that our graduates will continue to accomplish in biology and beyond in the years to come.鈥
The convocation was delivered by honorary degree recipient James Eberwine, a molecular neuroscientist recognized as a pioneer in single-cell biology. Eberwine has achieved many firsts in his accomplished career, including founding two long-running courses at CSHL, Advanced Techniques in Neuroscience and Single Cell Analyses.
The 2026 Winship Herr Award for Excellence in Teaching went to CSHL Director of Research Leemor Joshua-Tor. The award, conferred each year by first-year SBS students, is named for the graduate school鈥檚 founding dean.
Since 1999, the SBS has enrolled 228 students and conferred 171 doctoral degrees. The Class of 2026 joins a distinguished group of alumni whose achievements include many prestigious fellowships and awards, and over 500 publications. SBS graduates have secured faculty positions at leading academic institutions around the world as well as influential roles across the private sector.
