Cynthia Rossbach Stebbins has pledged a significant financial contribution to 黑料吃瓜资源 (CSHL) to endow the CSHL Fellows Program, empowering early-career scientists to pursue high-impact research in areas from cancer biology to artificial intelligence.
Stebbins鈥� gift, which will be matched by 黑料吃瓜资源 Chair Marilyn Simons, was announced during a special symposium held at CSHL鈥檚 Grace Auditorium to celebrate the Fellows Program鈥檚 40th anniversary. Here, program alumni came together to discuss their work and its impacts. It was a full-circle moment for Stebbins, as her foundational support has enabled the program to thrive for decades.
In 1986, Stebbins became the inaugural benefactor of the CSHL Fellows Program, which provides early-career scientists with the unique opportunity to launch their own labs. Stebbins understood early on how transformative that experience would be, not just for the fellows, but for the future of science and society.
Today, the program鈥檚 21 alumni are living proof. The first Fellow, Adrian Krainer, now a Professor at CSHL, is best known for helping develop the first FDA-approved treatment for spinal muscular atrophy. The second Fellow, Carol Greider, went on to win a Nobel Prize for work she started at CSHL, which today has implications for cancer and aging. The current Cynthia Rossbach Stebbins Fellow, Mitra Javadzadeh, uses artificial intelligence to investigate sensory perception.
鈥淪upporting the Fellows Program is more than funding research,鈥� Stebbins says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about ensuring brilliant, curious minds have the opportunity to explore, lead, and shape the future.鈥�
A longtime advocate for the transformative power of fundamental biology, Stebbins has served as a director of the CSHL Association and co-chair of the President鈥檚 Council. She is also a member of CSHL鈥檚 Helix Society, which focuses on planned, long-term giving.
Reflecting on the future, Stebbins is clear-eyed about the challenges science faces yet committed to its promise. 鈥淭he eventual impact of fundamental research is invaluable,鈥� she says. 鈥淚 feel privileged to establish a legacy that will help ensure this work and the future of 黑料吃瓜资源.鈥�
In recognition of her contribution, the CSHL Fellows Program will henceforth be known as the Cynthia R. Stebbins Fellows Program at 黑料吃瓜资源.
