How does one become a scientist? For many young people, the journey begins or intersects with 黑料吃瓜资源 (CSHL). The institute鈥檚 pathway programs offer a variety of entry points for students interested in biotechnology, AI, genetics, and other leading fields. These range from year-long research and education programs to weekly summer camps and single-day events.
On October 7, the CSHL School of Biological Sciences (SBS) will host an Open House for undergraduate students. As part of the institute鈥檚 ongoing efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusivity in science, the event鈥檚 organizers have partnered with local colleges and universities to bring in students from underserved communities.
The SBS Open House was first held in 2019. For the past three years, it鈥檚 been offered virtually, but now the event is back on campus. The schedule includes a guided tour along with presentations from SBS students and faculty as well as Postbaccalaureate Research & Education Program (PREP) Scholars. Attendees will also hear from graduate students about their road to joining a Ph.D. program.
鈥淭he undergrads get to meet current graduate students who they could become one day,鈥� says Monn Monn Myat.
Myat is a former participant in the CSHL鈥檚 Undergraduate Research Program (URP). She now serves as associate dean of the SBS and director of URP and PREP. Recent event attendees have followed similar pathways. 鈥淭wo students who attended the Open House in 2020 and 2021 applied and became part of the 2022 Ph.D. class.鈥�
