Associate Professor Mikala Egeblad is a recipient of the Marks Foundation . The ASPIRE award funds high risk, high reward approaches to solving complex problems in cancer research that tend to fall outside the scope of other funding opportunities.
Egeblad鈥檚 research is aimed at untangling the connection between stress and metastatic cancer. This could lead to the development of drugs that prevent metastasis by interfering with the body鈥檚 stress response.
Xueyan He, a postdoctoral fellow in Egeblad lab who will be heading up the project, explained that uncovering the connection is crucial in the fight against cancer. 鈥淧atients get stressed when they receive a cancer diagnosis, we can鈥檛 prevent that,鈥� He said. 鈥淪o it is important to understand and learn to target stress-induced metastasis in order to prevent future spread.鈥�
