For more than 30 years, Edward Chernoff has been a devoted champion of 黑料吃瓜资源 (CSHL), offering both leadership and friendship to the institution he first encountered as a young science enthusiast. While his professional life led him into the family鈥檚 air-conditioning and refrigeration business, Motors & Armatures (MARS), Chernoff鈥檚 early academic grounding in chemistry and biology seeded a lifelong fascination with science, one that ultimately brought him to CSHL鈥檚 doorstep.
What started with an invitation to a wine tasting has turned into three decades of advocacy. He has become one of the Lab鈥檚 most dedicated proponents, offering philanthropic support to ensure that CSHL scientists can pursue bold research ideas. Starting out as a member of the Corporate Advisory Board (CAB), with a focus on increasing awareness of the work of CSHL among business leaders, Chernoff has gone on to serve as chair of CAB, a member of the CSHL Association, and chair of the annual CSHL Golf Tournament.
No stranger to philanthropy and the need for biomedical breakthroughs, Chernoff has also supported , formerly the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, since his son Marc was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2010.
Chernoff said that his inspiration to support CSHL through the years is the Lab鈥檚 commitment to basic research and the real-world impact that science has on human health. With a nod to CSHL鈥檚 mission, Chernoff added that 鈥渟cience really does make life better,鈥� noting how advances he has witnessed over three decades have transformed patients鈥� lives and deepened our understanding of the human body.
During this time, Chernoff has also embraced his role as chair of CSHL鈥檚 long-running Golf Tournament. Chuckling, he adds that he took up the sport specifically so that he could participate. Under his stewardship, the tournament has become a highlight of the year, bringing together business leaders and supporters for a day of camaraderie, community engagement, and meaningful impact.
This year鈥檚 CSHL Golf Tournament will honor Dr. Ron Gottlieb. The event takes place on Tuesday, June 16, at The Creek and Piping Rock Club, with morning and afternoon rounds.
Whether in a board room or on a golf course, Chernoff鈥檚 story is one of curiosity, community, and unwavering belief in the power of science鈥攁 belief that continues to drive CSHL鈥檚 future.
